In many cases, gout can be controlled by simply avoiding certain foods. Foods that are high in purine can cause uric acid levels in the body to rise and cause a gout attack. Therefore avoiding these foods and eating them sparingly can help combat gout.

Foods that you want to avoid the most are foods that have over 150 mg of purine these include:

Muscles
Gravy
Brains
Anchovies
Hearts
Kidney
Liver
Sardines
Sweetbreads


In addition to avoiding the foods above other foods that have 50 mg of purine may contribute to attacks and you might want to limit the use. These foods include:

Cauliflower
Asparagus
Whole grains
Mushrooms
Oatmeal
Yeast
Dry beans

Other things to consider when trying to avoid gout attacks is to drink lots of water and avoid alcohol whenever possible.
